HABS CAPTAIN DEALT TO VEGAS FOR EVGENII DADONOV

NHL free agency is only a couple of weeks away, but the Montreal Canadiens decided not to wait before making a move, trading defenceman Shea Weber to the Vegas Golden Knights.

The now-former Habs captain, who led them to the Stanley Cup Final in 2021 missed the entire 2021-22 season with various injuries.


In return Montreal will receive veteran winger Evegenii Dadonov, who played 78 games with the Golden Knights last season, recording 20 goals, along with 23 assists.


Weber who was selected with the 49th overall pick in the 2003 NHL entry draft by the Nashville Predators, originally came to Montreal in a blockbuster deal in the summer of 2016, with P.K. Suban going to the Music City as part of the trade.


At 36 years old Weber has 589 points (224 goals, 365 assists) in 1,038 regular-season games.


A native of Sicamous, BC, Weber, is a seven-time NHL all-star, who won a gold medal for his country at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics, while also capturing a World Hockey championship with Team Canada in 2007.


He also won the Mark Messier leadership award in 2016 and captured a Memorial Cup with the Kelowna Rockets in 2004 along with the World Juniors in 2005.
