SUMMER TRANSFER WINDOW RUMOURS

EPL / UEFA / Soccer

Written by Aaron Cantin

The curtain has only just fallen on the 2021-22 season, but the summer transfer window will soon be open for clubs to trade ahead of the new campaign. There is no “off-season” in the soccer calendar, but this is as close as it gets. All of the top European leagues have concluded, and the Champions League has reigned a new champion of Europe. Of course, MLS in North America is midway through the season but ask any footy enthusiast and this is the off-season.

The summer transfer window opens June 10th for the EPL (the same for the other major leagues in Europe give or take a couple of days) which is the earliest teams can officially make transfers already agreed upon officially. We know the likes of Erling Haaland as already agreed to switch Manchester along with numerous other moves. But there is still a lot to be determined. The fun thing about transfer windows is you know there will be plenty of moves as it is only one of two times a year teams can acquire new players. Think of Trade Deadline day in the NHL but for an entire month. Good stuff. There are plenty of rumours swirling and below I will make sense of the biggest rumours and transfers that lie ahead.

Robert Lewandowski

Bayern Munich fans have been hit with an update that they were all dreading, but perhaps half-expecting. Robert Lewandowski has publicly revealed his desire to leave the club and go in search of a new challenge this summer. The prolific Pole has scored more goals than games in his last three seasons at the Allianz Arena, and Barcelona is thought to be very interested in bringing him to Camp Nou.

"My era at Bayern is over," he said. "I don't see any possibility to continue playing for this club anymore. I hope they don't stop me."

Prediction: Lewy’s next professional club game will be in a Barcelona jersey.

Romelu Lukaku

Chelsea ace Romelu Lukaku is reportedly on for a return to Inter Milan, with the Italian club preparing a £64million package to secure his services. Lukaku has flopped at Stamford Bridge since signing for the club for a second time last summer.

Inter are willing to offer Chelsea £12.75m to sign Lukaku on loan - and they would hand him a salary of £6m after tax. Their deal would also include an option to buy him for up to £51m next summer.

Prediction: Lukaku returns to Inter Milan and finds his old form.

Sadio Mane

This one shocks me to the bone. Liverpool fans are being made to sweat over the future of Sadio Mane, who has been with the club since 2016. Sky Germany claims that Bayern Munich is confident that they can get a deal over the line for less than £42.5million, given that the 30-year-old has just one year left on his contract.

You have to feel that Mane has grown tired of living in Salah’s shadow and wants to prove he is a Ballon D’Or contender on his own.

Prediction: If Lewy leaves Bayern the German giants will quickly pounce and sign Mane as the replacement.

Darwin Nunez

Manchester City has already made a statement by agreeing to sign Erling Haaland this summer, but Manchester United could be next to strike. the Red Devils are reported ‘close to an agreement' for in-demand striker Darwin Nunez.

He'd cost a fair chunk of cash with reports of around £80million floating about, but with 26 goals in 28 matches, including home and away against Liverpool in the Champions League, landing the 22-year-old would spark plenty of excitement for the new Erik ten Hag era.

Prediction: Manchester United end up paying nearly £100million for the striker.

Christopher Nkunku

The French forward was phenomenal this season with RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga and as a result, has caught the eye of all major sides around Europe. Leipzig, however, is not short of payroll and is in no rush to cash in. Leipzig will do everything they can to keep the Frenchman and continue to challenge for the club's first Bundesliga title in its history.

Prediction: Leipzig holds on to their man for one another season.

Frenkie De Jong

Barcelona's financial situation could be even worse than first thought amid reports that they are 'on the brink of economic collapse'. Frenkie de Jong is among those that Barca may auction off in an effort to raise funds, and Manchester United remains very keen on the Dutch midfielder.

De Jong has already stated he wishes to play his entire career with Barcelona, but the decision may not be his. When a player like Lewandowski becomes available and publicly states he would like to suit up with your squad, you do what you can to make room for him. Start a bidding war with the EPL squads for De Jong and that essentially pays for Lewy. You’d be crazy not to consider it.

Prediction: De Jong moves on to Manchester United and is quickly replaced by Lewandowski.
