The 47-year-old, who had been in charge of this team since 2020 saw the Panthers start the season 1-4, with their latest defeat coming on Sunday 37-15 to the San Francisco 49ers.

Carolina’s defensive pass game coordinator/secondary coach Steve Wilks will take over on an interim basis.

Rhule had $40 million remaining on his guaranteed $62 million contract that he signed with Carolina in 2020.

Two of Rhule’s assistants, defensive coordinator Phil Snow and assistant special teams coach Ed Foley were also dismissed.

Carolina has not made the postseason since 2017 and under Rhule, the Panthers have gone 11-27.

Wilks meanwhile becomes the second black coach in the history of this franchise with the other being Perry Fewell, who was the interim boss when Ron Rivera was axed.
