Not even the return of Tom Brady was enough to convince his coach to patrol the sidelines next season.
Bruce Arians has officially announced his retirement as Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach, accepting a position in the team’s front office next season.
The 69-year-old is retiring for a second time after being enticed to return in 2019 to take charge in Tampa.
Defensive coordinator Todd Bowles will take over as the new head coach, leaving his current position vacant for the time being.
Arians had been in the league for a long time on the offensive side, serving as the quarterback’s coach with the Indianapolis Colts in the early years of Hall of Fame pivot Peyton Manning before eventually accepting a head coaching position with the Arizona Cardinals.
His philosophy is summed up very simply in one phrase “No risk it, no biscuit”, a style that emphasizes the importance of playing aggressively and without fear.
In his second season in Tampa, he became the first coach to lead an NFL team to a Super Bowl on home soil, with the Bucs beating reigning champion Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 for their second championship.
Arians ends his coaching career with a regular-season record of 80-48-1 to go along with a 6-3 mark in the playoffs.
